Mascot Mania

We are well into football season. I never liked the sport, but it is a quite popular past time with the folks at work regardless of gender. On the professional level they pick their favorite team and start these bitter rivalries with people on opposing teams. Perhaps that is a natural phenomenon in a state with no professional football team.

What Oregon does have is two college teams. To the natives, this rivalry gets very ugly. Some of the folks around work have aligned themselves with either the Ducks or the Beavers depending on which school either they or their kids attend(ed). A little alma mater pride. Seeing as how alma mater is Latin for nourishing mother it is understandable. It makes as much sense as American pride and even I can get wrapped up in that some times.

But most of the people just choose one. They most likely have grown up in a family that preferred one team over the other for no particular reason and have sworn a lifelong allegiance to that particular team.

Brothers, sisters, isn't time to realize that you have more in common than you think? You don't have to be fighting. Nature figured it out. A bit kinky maybe, but hey, we're in Portland.

Due to a bizarre set of circumstances, we are the proud owners of a fairly extensive collection of children's platypus books.

Fear the platypus -- if for no other reason than any number of them are very poor writers...
