As you know, the Telecoms are almost certainly being granted immunity today for the 40+ civil suits currently pending against them. This ridiculous notion is being championed not just by the Republicans, but by the leadership of the Democrats. Only a handful of Dems and Independents have stood against it at any point in this process. Here's what they've said:
We can't let this go on any longer! There's just a few options left to us:Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) noted that, "We're considering granting immunity when roughly 70 members of the Senate still have not been briefed on the president's wiretapping program. The vast majority of this body still does not even know what we're being asked to grant immunity for."
Maddow spoke with Constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley, who explained, "What the Democrats are doing here with the White House is they're trying to conceal a crime that is hiding in plain view. ... Nobody wants to have a confrontation over the fact that the president committed a felony. ... That's a very inconvenient fact right now in Washington."
"The Democrats have learned well from Bush," Turley said in amazement. "They're just going to change the rules. ... It's otherworldly. ... I am completely astonished by Senator Obama's position -- and obviously disappointed. All of these senators need to respect us enough not to call it a compromise. It's a cave-in."
"It's like all those stories where someone is assaulted on the street and a hundred witnesses do nothing," continued Turley. "In this case, the Fourth Amendment is going to be eviscerated tomorrow, and a hundred people are going to watch it happen because it's just not their problem. ... There's not an ounce of principle, not an ounce of public interest in this legislation."

The leadership of the Democratic Party are shooting themselves in the foot at the same time they stab us in the back!
I can't think of a better way to throw the election to McCain than what they've been doing:
- Saying "Impeachment is off the table" as Pelosi did months ago when there was still time
- Pushing Kucinich's bill into limbo, despite mountains of evidence
- Giving the telecoms immunity from crimes they aren't even denying
- Refusing to seat anyone on the Civil Liberties board.
- Caving in to the president and the extreme Right on issue after issue after issue
- Destroying all chance we have of preventing crap like this from happening in the future by sending a message to future tyrants that they'll fucking look the other way for them too.
The democrats used to be the party of civil liberties and progressive liberal reform. Now they're just the party led by cowards, traitors and capitulators! Even McCain wants to distance himself from Bush, but the Democrats keep getting in bed with him. I like Obama, but I'm now considering voting for Barr or Nader. Letting this telecom immunity crap go through is burning all the good will I had for the Dems - and I've voted Democrat in every Presidential, Senatorial, or Congressional election as long as I could vote, and Democrat in most local elections (any time they weren't up against a Green). I feel betrayed.
What the fuck happened to our country - and how did it happen so fast?!?

They're all crooks and complicit in violating our 4th amendment rights and covering the asses of those who helped them break the law. These elected officials only care about power and protecting those who give them money.
