Outsourcing

Remember the good old days when cooking meth was a "Mom & Pop" (or more likely, "Mom & 'Uncle' Billy") operation? Looks like those days are over as methamphetamine production shifts from the house with the half-built deck down the street to Mexican "superlabs" who can ship product directly to their distributors via FedEx.

While local law enforcement may be happy about the prospect of fewer toxic and potentially explosives home labs, this has been overshadowed by the increasing violence that goes with large scale organized drug smuggling and dealing enterprises. As one ex-cooker noted:
"If you came to me and got an eight ball of dope and didn't pay me, that's cool," the former meth producer said. "You knew you could never come back and get anything from me ever again. Now, if you get $50 worth of dope on credit and don't pay, they're subject to go… burn your car, or hurt you or your mom or your family. That's the difference."
I'd like to say that I'm surprised, but this is exactly what happens when government thinks that it can subvert the law of supply and demand. By restricting access to the over-the-counter supply of pseudoephedrine they did not disrupt the market but merely shifted it farther underground. Throwing road blocks in the way of supply of any product, be it stimulants, alcohol, prostitution or manual labor does nothing to reduce the demand. Trade continues unabated, albeit through more dangerous means.

Note: I hate serifs.

Update: Hey! I was just changing my posts. I'm not telling anyone else what font to use. Bring on font anarchy.

Drug production by larger labs has its benefits. All that scarfaced faces of meth stuff? Most of that has to do with impure cooking. Organized drug labs will provide a stronger drug with fewer impurities.

I recall in 92-93 when my friends started to try the stuff. All of them called it 'crystal' and compared it to acid and ecstacy. As the home cooking began people called it 'meth' and associated it with speed and crack.

Drug cartels can be a good thing.

You hate serifs. I have no preference. No one else is posting. Guess who wins?
