Rolfe mentioned the recently late David Foster Wallace's Essay "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" which describes his week aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean. Rolfe had mentioned it to me before some years ago, but I had not read it until this reminder. Last night I found a downloadable PDF of the essay as published in Harper's some dozen years ago under the title "Shipping out". I too had a similar experience when in a desperate attempt to escape the misery of February in North Idaho and lured by post 911 travel deals, we booked a week aboard one of these container vessels of the damned. I'd try describing it myself, but the man was just so much more effective at this stuff.
