Let me address both of these issues. I needed a new printer and checked out Free Geek here in Portland. The place is fantastic. If you want to be on the cutting edge of technology then be prepared to shell out a lot of money often. But what if you just want a computer that can do all those wonderful online things we all crave? You want to e-mail, chat, watch videos on YouTube, and download lots and lots of porn. And what if you are dead broke? I mean you don't even have enough for the bus broke.
They recycle donated computer equipment. People drop off all their old tech (like anything that came out last week) to make room for their cutting edge stuff. The volunteer staff go through it, test parts, salvage what they can, build Freek Boxes, sell components, install Ubuntu on everything, and generally make a nice little business out of other people's useless crap. They then either sell for cheap or give away what they've got. This is a great model for a collapsing economy. After all, we've already got these resources, why not put them to use?

I might even volunteer some time there. I want to build another box. Volunteers get half off their already ridiculously low prices. It would also mean I could snatch up any cool tech that shows up. After all, my PC is 8 years old. In computer years, that's almost as old as McCain.
