fleeting peace

In the midst of yet another pointless flamewar (not involving me this time) over at a forum I visit, someone posted these:
"In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves."

"Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned."

"You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger."

"Anger will never disappear so
long as thoughts of resentment are
cherished in the mind. Anger will
disappear just as soon as thoughts
of resentment are forgotten."

- Buddha
and
"Unruly beings are as unlimited as space
They cannot possibly all be overcome,
But if I overcome thoughts of anger alone
This will be equivalent to vanquishing all foes."

-Shantideva

Someone else posted:

"statement of opinion as if it were fact.

out of hand dismissal of anyone’s opinion who disagrees with me.

subtle insult to their intelligence, played coyly as if to appear as a humorous olive branch.

evidence on par with the evidence offered by others, then categorical dismissal of their evidence.

needless insult

witty ending."
People there may actually be getting sick of all the infighting. Perhaps there is hope for the human race after all.
