4 out of 5 discs

Having done my research, I've concluded I not only want to buy Blade Runner: The Final Cut, but I have to get the 4-disc Collector's Edition.

Disc 1 - The Final Cut. This is an actual Director's Cut, not the faux directors cut that was released in '92. Cleaned up, remastered. Minor continuity holes were patched. Harrison Ford's lips always match his words. Joanna Cassidy's (instead of her stunt double's) face is now present crashing through the glass wall. The Unicorn sequence is longer.

Disc 2 - Dangerous Days. A 214-minute documentary featuring interviews with over 80 members of the cast and crew. The part where Harrison Ford snarkily recalls about how he was forced (by the Studio) to record voice-over narration while Ridley Scott was out of town is supposedly "priceless".

Disc 3- 3 Archival Versions. US Theatrical Release, International Release (more nudity and violence), and the so-called Director's Cut. I've seen all 3 before, and have my favorite on VHS.

Disc 4 - Archival Enhancements. Here's the one that makes me have to get the 4 disc version instead of the 2-disc Special Edition. It's got lots of short documentaries, including three on Phillip K. Dick and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. More importantly, this disc's got 48 minutes of previously unreleased deleted scenes.

If you're interested in learning more about the Blade Runner Final Cut, here's the most thorough review I found. My post is a very brief summary of their 4-page detailed analysis.

(For the Record: I'll be passing on the 5 disc Ultimate Collector's Edition. Disc 5 features the Workprint Cut that was shown accidentally at UCLA in '90. While I would like to see it, I can't justify an extra $35 for a 5th version of the film that differs only marginally from the so-called Director's Cut. It comes with a silver unicorn and 4" flying car, all packaged in the briefcase that Decker carries his Voigt-Kampf test machine in. While those trinkets appeal to the collector-geek inside me, I just don't think I should indulge my pack-rat desires. Maybe if I had plans to make my own Blade Runner parody, it'd be worth it. Maybe, but it'd still be dangerous for me to start collecting trinkets again. ...I make my saving throw, and say "no" to the 5-dvd version. That was close.)

lose 3 pack-rat points for passing on the extra stuff.

gain 5 geek points for expressing that decision as a "saving throw".
