Pentagon arms its enemy's enemies in Iraq

I'm trying to think of when this strategy hasn't backfired on us.
The US military has embarked on a new and risky strategy in Iraq by arming Sunni insurgents in the hope that they will tackle al-Qaida operatives in Iraq...

The danger in the US strategy is that the insurgents could eventually use these weapons against American troops or in the civil war against Shia Muslims. Similar efforts by the US in other wars have often backfired, the most spectacular being the arming of guerrillas against the Soviets in Afghanistan.
What about the arming of Iraqis against Iran? That ended pretty well. Speaking of which, what happened to those weapons? Here, we'll give you another gun. Try not to lose it this time.

At first you laugh.

Then you cry.

And then you start to laugh again.

Finally, you stand on the street corner shouting at traffic.

I think I'm somewhere between step 3 and step 4.

In General George Custer's Book, My Life On The Plains, he bitched about Washington arming the indians he had to fight. Not much has changed in our politics of war in 150 years. He also said if the indians lost a gun they were given a new one. If a soldier lost a Carbine he was forced to buy a new one for twice the price!
