Pop Goes the Nation

The Pop vs. Soda Page

I'm a Soda man myself, but I grew up a Pop child. The word seemed so inelegant that I reprogrammed myself to use the multisyllabic term.

If I may be so bold, is it just me or does this map tend to also indicate regional educational discrepancies? Go to the main page and you can view soft drink terminology isolated by the word used. Or is how we ask for a list of carbonated refreshments an indicator of political leanings?

Which factor is most likely to influence the others?

Man, they did a poor job of color-coding that thing. The shades for "no data" and "80-100% coke" are really close to each other. At first glance, I interpreted things about the purplish Montana-to-Kansas line that are just not true. Though, that may say more about my eyes than it does about their map.

I can attest to the accuracy of the Minneapolis vs Albuquerque coloration. It was like entering a whole 'nother world. Haven't noticed any change in Seattle, as I mostly order iced tea now.
