May 23rd is Chaos Day in our household. It is the anniversary of a journey where within mere minutes of the onset, nothing seemed to go according to plan... for about nine months. It is a day that holds as much importance for us as our anniversary.
To celebrate the 5th anniversary of Chaos Day we went out to the Savoy Tavern & Bistro. We had some deep fried Wisconsin cheese curds and a bowl of pork and beef meatballs in a typically Midwestern bland marinara. Deep fried Walleye was the Friday special, but I passed on it.
So how awesome is that? Close to home is a place that sells Midwestern comfort food that comes in Midwest size portions at California prices in an upscale casual environment. They even got the dishes right. The cream and sugar cubes (yes cubes) were served in white china with a dark blue design around the rim. Even the steel water pitcher had a tackily decorated handle that reminded me of the old fellowship hall at the home town Lutheran church. All this atmosphere and great food served up at prices that make yuppie hipsters crave it. I suppose you are paying for the privilege of not having to grow up Minnesotan (like one of the girls on the right).
The deep fried cheese curds really were kick ass, though.

You mentioned cheese curds! The best come from the proclaimed “Cheese Curd Capital of Wisconsin” in Ellsworth, Wisconsin. The Governor of Wisconsin gave them that title! They are so squeaky good!
They do have a web site www.ellsworthcheesecurds.com and sell fresh and lightly, hand-breaded cheese curds. I was told that they sold 104,000 lbs to just one of many State Fairs last year and they are in A&W Restaurants and grocery stores nationwide. If you go to a Milwaukee Brewers home game you can buy the breaded cheese curds there. These cheese morsels remain the color of milk: White!
(Have you ever drank a glass of orange milk?) Their cheese is ALL NATURAL and is made from rBST free milk. They are so yummy!
Yeah, but do they have Hamm's?
