This is for Rolfe. I figured he would be happy to see further evidence in his pursuit of trying to prove to people that conspiracies do exist.
7 Insane Conspiracies That Actually HappenedInterestingly, most of them center around thwarted conspiracies. Which makes sense. A successful conspiracy would have maintained a level of secrecy proportionate to its level of success.
In 1933, group of wealthy businessmen that allegedly included the heads of Chase Bank, GM, Goodyear, Standard Oil, the DuPont family and Senator Prescott Bush tried to recruit Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler to lead a military coup against President FDR and install a fascist dictatorship in the United States. And yes, we're talking about the same Prescott Bush who fathered one US President and grandfathered another one.
After all, even the infamous British tabloids were able to keep quiet about Prince Harry's deployment in Afghanistan. The foreign news sources that broke the story have since apologized saying, "We're sorry, but nobody told us it was supposed to be kept secret."

I would go look at the site, but my (government) job blocks me from seeing it.

...Provocative attire?!? Go figure.
Anyway, I'd heard of that one. ...Wasn't it in Fahrenheit 911? I forget. But, yeah, that one's pretty crazy.
Isn't the spread of Libertarianism is about as harmful as most conspiracies? [duck, roll]
Yeah, the Smedley Butler one is pretty huge. Butler's track record is impressive - he rose to a high rank in the Military, and was not a crackpot blogger, such as myself. While it was never proven in court, there's every likelihood that this conspiracy occurred, and came frighteningly close to fruition.
I read about it so long ago that I had forgotten the involvement of Prescott Bush. How illuminating. Do you suppose he might have instilled some of his outstanding patriotic values in his children and grandchildren?
My favorite quote from the article Jake linked to:
"Hitler, who as a level-20 dark wizard had extraordinary damage absorption abilities, survived with only minor injuries."
