Si. Harsh and Cruel. Her face is painted up like it's the Day of the Dead, beneath which she wears S&M leathers. You never know what kind of diseases she'll be bringing home tonight.
Back when Coca-Cola released New Coke, they took old Coke off the market for several months. When public demand "forced" it back on to the American marketplace as Classic Coke, they pulled a fast one. They returned the previous formula, except substituting High-Fructose Corn Syrup for the Cane Sugar. Since America hadn't had the original in months, the change went largely unnoticed. Coke made even more obscene billions than they had previously, since HFCP is so cheap. It's an awesome, verifiable, real-world conspiracy that was eventually exposed. Thousands of people knew about the change and lie implicit in the "classic" advertising, and yet most kept quiet about it because their jobs were on the line.
For reasons unknown to me, the Coke Factories in Mexico still use Sugar Cane.
Ever since being told about all this about five years back by Jeff Grubb and Burl Zorne at a GAMA luncheon, I've always wanted to try a Mexican Coke. But, even in Albuquerque, NEW Mexico, I could not find OLD Coke from CLASSIC Mexico.
Last night, I found myself in a restaurant whose menu trumpeted: "Coke imported from Mexico!" Even though we'd been to the movies earlier that day, and I'd eaten more sugar than I usually get in a week, I just couldn't say no.
Within an hour of getting home, I crashed - HARD. Went from wide-awake to delirious in minutes. I passed out at like 7:30 pm.
At midnight I was awoken by my neighbors TV. My head was pounding, my teeth felt like they'd been struck by chisels made of rock candy, and the super-imposed head of some Aztec dude was moaning "Revenge!" I almost didn't make it to bathroom in time. It took 4 hours, extra-strength pain relievers, and cops visiting my neighbors with my noise complaint before I could get back to sleep. Then I slept an hour and a half past the alarm. My belly keeps posting sensationalist headlines about the aftershocks.
Don't do it. It's just not worth it.

In actuality cane sugar is much simpler to process. The only reason that HFCS is so much cheaper is that the US government has a high tariff on cane sugar to protect the tiny US sugar industry and large subsidies to corn farmers. In Mexico, neither of those conditions exist so real sugar is less expensive.
In some good news on the soda front I was able to once again break my Mt. Dew addiction since they don't sell it down there.
Well then, it must have been the water. I was sick as a dawg. Still feel pretty shaky.
well, that pure sugar does have a good kick to it.
