Sometimes I have to remind myself in the middle of a news story that I'm not reading The Onion.
“I know people looking in from the outside will ask why someone like me keeps working so hard,” Mr. Steger says. “But a few million doesn’t go as far as it used to. Maybe in the ’70s, a few million bucks meant ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,’ or Richie Rich living in a big house with a butler. But not anymore.”
I laughed and laughed and laughed. Not out loud, because it is not that kind of funny. It's true, a few million just ain't what it used to be.
Ooh don't poo-poo a nickel, Lisa. A nickel will buy you a steak and kidney pie, a cup of coffee, a slice of cheesecake and a newsreel. With enough change left over to ride the trolley from Battery Park to the polo grounds.
Inflation is a bitch.
