Holiness, Hubris & Humiliation

Yesterday morning a familiar photo graced the front page of all the local papers. Another douche-bag holding a press conference to deny (or later admit) some accusation of committing some act which isn't (or ought not be) a crime with his ashen-faced wife standing by his side looking like she wished she (or more likely he) were dead. It's a sight to which we've become quite accustomed lately. This time the wife, Suzanne, had the good sense to at least wear dark glasses.

Maybe that would have worked for Hillary Clinton as the cameras repeatedly caught her pinched smile during the 1998 State of the Union Address shortly after her husband's denial of the Monica Lewinsky affair. This was no mere press conference; she had to put up a façade of actually believing that crap for months on end.

Eventually, however, the truth comes out. You either have to admit it or continue to be ambushed in your car by reporters.

Seriously, the look on Gayle Haggard's face last fall... That's some funny shit.

A few weeks ago it was Wendy Vitter standing glumly next to, and slightly over, her abstinence-only and anti-gay-marriage preaching husband as he admitted that he had exchanged money for physical acts with another consenting adult. One almost wants to sympathize with her. After all, she's not the whore-monger.

Then she took the microphone and began to criticise "the media" for camping out on their lawn and following them to church. Hey, you chose to put yourself in the public eye by marrying a politician, and worse, you chose to put yourself up to additional scrutiny by marrying a politician who likes to tell other people how to live their personal lives. That's the problem, and you are just as much a part of it--if not more--than he is.

At least Kobe Bryant bought his wife a $4 million dollar ring after embarassing her.
