The latest iteration of Lawrence Lessig's latest speech clocks in at just 18 minutes, which means everyone can find time to watch this one, and it moves at a pretty rapid pace.
As a long time a champion of copyright reform, Lawrence Lessig fought against Disney at the Supreme Court. He's the originator of the Creative Commons license. Now he's hard at work trying to tear down the special interests that have corrupted Congress. This man kicks ass.
Hey Obama, your next Supreme Court appointee should be Lawrence Lessig!

Ctrl+Alt+Del Democracy
Awesome Lawrence Lessig speech from the Rebooting Democracy conference in Bend, Oregon:
Starts off a little slow, admittedly, because he covers a lot of ground he's done before. But the last half is pretty astounding. Radical, even, and not in the skaterpunk / valley girl way. If you lack patience and are familiar with Prof. Lessig, you can probably skip first 25 minutes or so.

Burning Passion
The good news is, the evidence wasn't destroyed, so there'll be no mistrial.
The bad news is, when they say "not at the courthouse", they mean the office staff have been taking your sex tape home for personal use. ;)
Alleged John Edwards sex tape survives courthouse fire
(CNN) -- A sex tape allegedly showing former Sen. John Edwards survived a fire that torched a North Carolina courthouse on Thursday.
Actually, the tape that was the subject of a February court hearing at the historic Chatham County Courthouse was not at the courthouse during the blaze, city officials said.
The bad news is, when they say "not at the courthouse", they mean the office staff have been taking your sex tape home for personal use. ;)

Science-Gate
Hilarious video on the ridiculousness of Climategate. That one won't let me embed it on blogger, but it's worth following the link to watch.

It's beginning to look a lot like Fishmen
I've been holding off posting this, because I didn't want to make anyone here get xmas music stuck in their heads, even if it was Lovecraftian xmas music. But then, someone posted their Satan Claws lyrics, so I figured I should return the favor.
If you've ever read H.P. Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth , this video should amuse.
For me, it elicits an emotional reaction - makes my eyes get watery, even puts a little frog in my throat. :) Or perhaps that's just eldritch inbreeding.

Sleeping Betty
I'm rarely impressed by anything that makes it onto "today's spotlight videos" as deemed worthy by my igoogle page. But, thanks to the strange green fellow with all the eyeballs, I decided today's animation was worth a click.
The following cartoon could easily fit inside a Terry Gilliam / Monty Python production, or alongside Bill Plympton's animated work. It's bizarre, absurd, artsy, and a little funny. I liked it.

Tatooine is just Arrakis with smaller worms, anyway...
Just following a meme to ground. ...A friend sent me a link to an article that I accidentally deleted before I could post it here. Googling "Laura Dern as Grand Moff Tarkin" didn't do me much good, other than turning up this video, but at least it's entertaining:

George Lucas In Love
Just like Shakespeare In Love, except, about some nerd. Worth a laugh (assuming you've got 8 minutes with nothing better to do)...

Interesting Drawing Techniques
The following is sort of a drawing how-to. It'll teach you illustration style and technique. Very educational. It certainly changed the way I look at drawing.

Typecast Forever After
Here's a short film I was in, way back in '95. It's a blend of 16mm and pixelvision, directed by Audie Harrison:
Missed me? I was the doctor in scrubs and a gasmask (not just some surgical mask, like the other doctor), briefly appearing along the LEFT side of the screen - I cracked Adam's skull open. I'm barely noticable in the final film. I also helped with props and various minor tasks on-set, basically working like a production-assistant, though at the time I wasn't even familiar with the term. In retrospect, I wish I'd hammed it up a bit more, you can't even really see any details of the gasmask.
P.S.: The post is called "Typecast Forever After" because I end up in scrubs again in one of my scenes in J. Starr Welty's Black, releasing this fall. Happily, though, my face and actual acting will end up in at least a couple scenes in that much longer film.

po' man stedicam
Jeremy sent me this link to do-it-yourself steady-cam instructions.
$14 is a heck of a lot better than what a real steadicam rig costs. I've got the tools necessary to do it, though I might need a sturdier drillbit. (I don't break out the powerdrill often, and I've never used this drill on steel.) There's a hardware store just around the corner, but I'd need to go further to find a sports store for the counterweight. Does REI sell barbell weights?
I think I'll try the tripod trick first, and shoot some test footage using it as a steadicam. If I'm not happy with the performance of tripod-as-steadcam, I'll start looking for a sports store not far off the bus routes.

putting all your clones in one basket
Audie should have the footage from "The Blood Orgy" next week (I mailed the pixel tapes to him this week), which means eventually Jake might get around to digitizing the footage from A View To A Clone 2: In The Mouth Of Cloneness to trade to Audie. In anticipation, I mirrored the original AVTAC over to my YouTube channel.
Of course, there's no telling how long it will take Audie to deal with that pixelvision footage. He promised to scan and post the illuminati postcards months ago, after all. I am such a hypocrite.

2 more films
Not particularly proud of either of these - neither is my best work, by a long shot, and yet neither is crappy enough to have the unedited charm of Pizza Face Death. Very mediocre. I just wanted to get them off my harddrive, so YouTube it was.
"When Watermelon Attack" is a thrilling tale of debauchery and carnivorous fruit. In it's natural habitat, the wild watermelon feasts mostly upon housecats.
It's not as good as The Sweded Dune, any of the Clone films, or most of the PFDs. I do, however, have a defense: my stars were two kittens and a slice of fruit on a plate, only one of which had ever done any acting previously.
"Footprints" is sort of a visual poem about our impact on our surroundings. It ain't great, by any means. Ghosts on a Bridge did the same thing, except better. More than anything, Footprints is proof I should probably stick to comedic narratives. Scratch that: more than anything, footprints is proof I need to carry a tripod everywhere, 'cause I couldn't hold a camera steady if my life depended on it. Here it is anyway:
